Understanding Pitocin
Pitocin is a synthetic form of oxytocin, the hormone that naturally causes contractions during labor. It is commonly used in hospitals to induce or augment labor by stimulating stronger and more frequent contractions.
To better understand Pitocin, we can understand oxytocin first.
Oxytocin:
A hormone produced in the brains hypothalamus is what induces natural labor and contract the uterus. Oxytocin is often referred to as the “Love drug”. We produce oxytocin when...
We are attracted to a mate
During sexual intercourse (it assists with arousal, fosters bonding and may facilitate sperm and egg transport)
Following positive social interactions (it can even potentially improve wound healing following such positive interactions, say experts), and with other positive experiences.
Partnered with melatonin, a hormone that encourages sleep and follows the body's natural circadian rhythm.
Oxytocin is produced in pregnancy, levels increase significantly during active labor and childbirth, and both mom and baby produce oxytocin after birth during breastfeeding
Oxytocin evokes feelings of contentment, trust, empathy, calmness, and security and reduces anxiety and fear. Under certain circumstances, oxytocin can hinder the release of cortisol or stress hormones. Amazingly, oxytocin tells the brain to release powerful pain killers called, endorphins.
What is the difference between Oxytocin and Pitocin?
Pitocin, a synthetic form of the hormone oxytocin, is produced through a chemical synthesis process.
Pitocin does not:
Cross the blood brain barrier so the body does not release endorphins to help cope with intense contractions.
Respond to the mothers emotions or environment
Pitocin does:
Effectively contract uterus.
Help prevent hemorrhage after delivery of baby.
Limit the amount of oxytocin produced after birth.
Admistered via a IV controlled with a pump.
Increased risk of fetal distress. Often times, more monitoring from hospital system.
*It is also important to remember that there are times pitocin is life saving or necessary. Pitocin is not the enemy, but rather the misuse of it*
Things to Consider:
Please note: Pitocin administered afterbirth is sometimes hospital policy and is not asked of the patient before administered. Make sure to ask if it is medically necessary before they administer.
Vbacs and Pitocin: It is not medically necessary to be induced with Pitocin in order to have a VBAC. In fact, Labor induction can decrease the likelihood of a successful VBAC. Higher doses of Pitocin are associated with an increased risk of uterine rupture. According to research, the success rate for a VBAC induced with Pitocin is generally consider to be between 10% and 20% less successful.
The bag used to administer Pitocin will be labeled as oxytocin, most likely in a a clear bag with green header. Like the picture on client portal.
